Scheduling of Multicast Tra c in Tunable-Receiver WDM Networks with Non-Negligible Tuning Latencies

چکیده
We consider the problem of supporting multipoint communication at the media access control (MAC) layer of broadcastand-select WDM networks. We rst show that bandwidth consumption and channel utilization arise as two con icting objectives in the design of scheduling algorithms for multicast tra c in this environment. We then present a new technique for the transmission of multicast packets, based on the concept of a virtual receiver, a set of physical receivers which behave identically in terms of tuning. We also show that the number k of virtual receivers naturally captures the tradeo between channel utilization and bandwidth consumption. Our approach decouples the problem of determining the virtual receivers from the problem of scheduling packet transmissions, making it possible to employ existing scheduling algorithms that have been shown to successfully hide the e ects of tuning latency. Consequently, we focus on the problem of optimally selecting the virtual receivers, and we prove that it is NP-complete. Finally, we present four heuristics of varying degrees of complexity for obtaining virtual receivers that provide a good balance between the two con icting objectives.

Scheduling algorithms for multicast traffic in TDM/WDM networks with arbitrary tuning latencies
We consider all-optical TDM/WDM broadcast and select networks with slotted operation. Each network access node is equipped with one fixed transmitter and one tunable receiver; tuning times are not negligible with respect to the fixed size slot time. We discuss efficient scheduling algorithms to assign TDM/WDM slots to multicast traffic in such networks. The problem is shown to be NP-hard; thus,...

To accommodate the demands of QoS and multicast applications, a multicast QoS traffic scheduling algorithm with tuning latency consideration in WDM star-coupled network is provided in this paper. We define the slot scanning problem in the connection setup process as the Maximum Assignable Slots (MAS) problem. We prove that the optimal solution of MAS problem can be obtained in polynomial time. ...

We focus on all-optical broadcast and select slotted WDM networks. Each network user is equipped with one tunable transmitter and one fixed receiver; full connectivity is achieved by tuning transmitters to all different wavelengths available in the optical spectrum. Tuning latencies are considered to be not negligible with respect to the slot time. A network controller allocates fixed size slot...
متن کاملScheduling Combined Unicast and Multicast Tra c in WDM Networks
We study the performance of various strategies for scheduling a combined load of unicast and multicast tra c in a broadcast WDM network. The performance measure of interest is schedule length, which directly a ects both aggregate network throughput and average packet delay. Three di erent scheduling strategies are presented, namely: separate scheduling of unicast and multicast tra c, treating m...
